Childhood Dairy ~

Childhood has no necessary connection with age. If you carry your childhood with you, you will never become older, it is the kingdom where nobody dies, and personally I have never been able to keep myself away from children’s books.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is one such book, and the whole series has been a lot of fun. A novel in cartoons by Jeff Kinney released in 2007 under the fiction category, it is one of those rare novels that captures the imagination with wit, and slapstick comedy. The book is designated as a New York Times Best Seller. Full of middle school humour, this is the first book in the series.

This is the diary of Greg Heffley, except Greg wants readers to know, "This is a JOURNAL, not a diary" and "...this was MOM's idea, not mine."

Greg is one of three children. According to Greg, his little brother, Manny, "never gets in trouble, even if he really deserves it," and his older brother Rodrick is always getting the best of Greg. Greg also talks about his best friend Rowley in an interesting manner. In his diary, Greg details his daily activities, starting with the first day of middle school and his warnings to readers about choosing where to sit in class. The writer has described all the ups and downs very interestingly through handwritten notes and simple drawings, making it perfect for reader’s enjoyment.

The text has all sorts of witty sayings by the students. For instance, middle schoolers are supposed to say “hang out” instead of “play.” In addition, the school distinguishes between gifted and ordinary students by the assigned readings. Gifted students read books like Einstein as a Child; whereas, average students read the easy books like Bink Says Boo.

In one episode a certain Halloween prank is described and in another episode Kinney demonstrates why joining the safety patrol is so popular in school.

All these things remind me of my own childhood. Taking me back into time the series surely give me wings to fly , to fly back to those happy , carefree days when it was so easy to express and easier to write.

“A rose gets its colour and fragrance from the root, and man his virtue from his childhood”. Be it the kids or adults, this one is a great pick!
